Probably around a year ago, my wife and I have started watching YouTube channels of DJs, where they mix house music (the chilled music types) that we can just play in the background while we are working from home.
We were kind of shocked that these videos of DJs mixing get millions of views. Many of them are just in their home, bedrooms, and some are in spectacular locations, and some at parties.
There were a couple of DJs that we really liked, here is one example (15 million views and counting):
To my surprise, my wife told me she wanted to learn to DJ. So I thought OK, we should start researching. Should we rent, buy a second hand DJ gear, or a new one. We ended up buying a new one – just a beginner’s level DJ gear, the Pioneer DDJ-FLX4.
Our plan was to learn, then create our own DJ mix videos. The concept is we mix music while travelling, where there is master shot of us mixing on the gear, but with our travel videos as inserts between the mixes.
Weeks Later
I think I was at a good enough level to start mixing and make videos. So we went to Canberra for a weekend. Perfect timing cause my friends are visiting from Indonesia, so we took them to Canberra too.
Here is the video on YouTube (but this post isn’t about this, more on it shortly):
The plan was to shoot our travel videos, then we can make two types for YouTube videos:
- One for the DJ channel.
- The other one for our travel channel.
It’s good in theory, but much harder in practice, for these reasons:
- With both of us working full-time, we don’t even have time to edit videos for 1 channel, let alone 2 channels.
- I am much more shy than I thought. We went to a second location at Port Stephens by the beach to mix, but our accommodation was above a cafe and a lot of people could see our balcony. So I had cold feet and decided to cancel the mix. Boohoo.

So naturally, there is only one channel to do, which is our travel channel.
If you have known me for long, you’d know that I love to travel (and my wife too). I have always wanted to start a side-gig related to travel. And we have been watching several YouTubers with their travel channels, believe or not mostly about their trip to Indonesia. Yup, been away from home for too long.
Here is one YouTuber that I like:
So we got to work. We re-edited our Canberra clips to become a travel video.
Here is our first long form video on YouTube (we have uploaded 2 shorts just before, to test the channel):
I hope you enjoy.
